Intergeneration and multi generation learning are the oldest evolved methods of learning where filial relationships has been characterised by great respect for the older people in many countries India, China, Japan, Palestine, etc. UNESCO (2000) defined Intergenerational learning programmes as ‘vehicles for the purposeful and ongoing exchange of resources and learning among older and younger generations. European Network for Intergenerational Learning (ENIL) (Frank et al, 2012) also concludes that “Intergenerational Learning is a learning where the generations work together to gain skills, values and knowledge, mutually and reciprocally benefitting participating generations. It creates significant learning opportunities and bring about transformation in perspective.

Philosophy of Intergenerational learning centre is to offer individualised attention to every child and create a healthy aura of growth, where each child can explore, express and achieve its own potential.

 

Healthy Aging- Intergenerational Learning Centre “IGLC”

Intergenerational Learning Centre (IGLC) is a landmark changemaker initiative of Healthy Aging India (HAI- an NGO) and have Ethical approval from AIIMS Ethics Committee to conduct a research study, under the guidance of Faculties from Department of Geriatric Medicine, AIIMS. IGLC project is financially supported by Gandhi Smriti & Darshan Samiti (autonomous body under Ministry of Culture), ONGC and other CSR Partners to improve Quality of life by facilitating inclusive symbiotic meaningful engagement of potentially undermined vulnerable groups- Older Indians & disadvantageous but Aspirant children of 6th -7th Std from Government School.

Creative activities in IGLC

Creative activities supplementing the school assignments includes monthly or weekly thematic integrated plans and spontaneous activities of Art, Story sessions, exposure to Theatre art, Dancing, Computer skill training, Games & Play activities, Yoga, Eco-cultural integrity programmes, Life skills, Language development and Vocabulary enrichment linguistics aided by A/V tools and learning resources, Focus on cultural and environmental concepts, Water, Hygiene and cleanliness practices, Games, Exhibitions and visit to places of cultural significance, etc.

Criteria of selection and perks to school children

School children are selected given the performance index on several indicators – Preliminary baseline survey questionnaire, Economic criteria, School attendance, Behavioural aspects and Willingness of the parents to send their child to the learning centres, Priority is given to the Girl child, etc.

Students are provided with stationeries material, whenever required free of cost. Healthy refreshment is given to students during classes to nurture and help meet some of the vital nutritional supplements. To address issue of Malnourishment in students – a specific diet chart is recommended as prescribed by dietician. Counselling session are organised from time to time for students. Home drop transport facility after IGLC class is provided for safe home drop free of cost.

Meaningful engagement of Elderlies as Educators

Enthusiastic, educated and experienced group of Elderly, retired from various professions dedicate time to educate Govt. school children. Training sessions are given to Elderlies by experienced faculties from NCERT and Govt. Education department to orient Educators on teaching methodologies and learning strategies.

Monitoring and evaluation

The progress, assessment and impact on students, parents and elderly people is monitored and evaluated from time to time by competent authorities from District Basic Education office, District Administration, Directorate of Education, Ministry of culture, ONGC and Independent Experts.

Expected Outcomes

It gives opportunities to school children to improve grades and performance in examination, increase attendance and retention rate in school, participation in co-curricular activities, gradual and steady enrichment of constructive habits, mannerism, good qualities, etc. Change towards problem solving attitude, desire to be innovative, emerging to be confident, assertive with positive outlook and above all traits to become a responsible citizen are observed in children.

In the long run, Intergenerational Learning centre would brighten the career prospects of underprivileged students. Computer learning, Skill development activities and creative expression in form of Arts are not only shaping personalities of participating children but harbours opportunities of leadership & better chances of employability. Success stories of these children and Elderly people is/would be a great inspiring factor for other vulnerable and underprivileged school children and Senior Citizens.

Impact of IGLC on Elderlies is on promotion of active aging, lifelong learning, quotient of happiness, quality of Life, overall attitude towards living life, feeling of belongingness, self-worth and productivity. Engagement of Elderlies gives them opportunities to interact and enjoy the spirit of being with children. It helps them to resume an active lifestyle, build over cognitive reserve functions, prevent old age neurological disorders, memory loss, dementia etc. bringing autonomy & dignity to their life.
