The Intergenerational Learning Centre (IGLC), led by Healthy Aging India, connects elderly educators with schoolchildren, enriching learning and fostering mutual growth. The project has boosted children’s education and emotional well-being while giving seniors renewed purpose and dignity, making it a standout model of community-driven impact.
At IGLC, we promote active and healthy aging by engaging seniors in meaningful educational roles, this bridges generational gaps and revives the concept of “learning from the wise”.
Through this, we enhance the academic and emotional development of underprivileged children. This targets weak academic foundations in underprivileged schools and fosters mutual respect, cultural exchange, and moral development across generations.

Government school students in India often face inadequate infrastructure and motivation to be educated. Many students coming from troubled or economically backward regions face issues like addiction, crime, drop-outs and child labour between the ages of 11-14. This is also the age at which they are most susceptible to developing good habits, values and knowledge.
Retired elderly people coming from nuclear families often face issues such as feeling lonely, unproductive and a burden. This prevents them from aging healthy and happily.
By connecting these two target groups, the elderly provide students value education, storytelling session and additional classes to clear their doubts. Students learn from familial relationships with their teachers and feel an increased motivation to create their bright futures.
Many tribal regions in Jharkhand continue to face challenges like inadequate infrastructure, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and ongoing economic marginalization.
The Intergenerational Learning Centre (IGLC) bridges this gap by connecting elderly mentors with tribal children, offering a complementary and culturally sensitive model of education.
The IGLC program is currently running successfully in Jharkhand, in two locations.
Ranchi- Where we have 5 schools, 5 community centers and 25 elderly educators mentoring a sum of 2245 students across class 6-8
Dhanbad- Where we have 10 government schools where 16 elderly educators are teaching 1458 young middle school children.
Purposeful Engagement gives the elderly educators opportunities to interact and enjoy the spirit of being with children and help them being active not only physically but also mentally.
